If you are using windows operating system on your computer and want to install Linux also as dual boot system but you are new to Linux environment and dont know nothing about how to partition hard disk , this blog is the right place for you .
Lets learn how to install Linux (Ubuntu 11.10) step by step on you system.
Step 1. (Preparing the Bootable Linux CD/ Pendrive)
Go to http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download to download Ubuntu Linux
Step 2. click here to create a bootable pen drive
Step 3.(Back up you data from Last drive )
I will explain this with an example
Let's assume that you have 240 GB hard disk in your system .
Drive Letter Space Label
C Drive 50 GB [Window]
D Drive 90 GB [Data]
E Drive 100 GB [Movies]
Now move all the data from E Drive[Movies] to D Drive [Data]
Step 2.(Partitioning the Hard Disk )
Now your E drive is empty after moving all data to D drive .
Now we want to make a below partitions for Linux
20 GB drive for Linux and other software installation and user data
6 GB Partition for Swap drive [Swap drive size should be at least double of your system RAM size, I have 3 GB RAM in my system in this example ]
Go to Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> --- > Disk Manager
Divide/ Resize the E drive into 74 GB + 20 GB + 6 GB sizes = 100 GB (total size of E drive)
Restart the system and boot with Bootable Pendrive / CD
For 20 GB drive select " / " from mount dropdown box and ext3 file format
Example : /dev/sda6 ext3 52428 MB
For 6 GB drive select Swap
Example : /dev/sda7 swap 5494 MB
